After two very successful shows Kings on Ice and Stars on Ice, this is another chance to see major figure skating show in Bratislava.
An unpleasant message came from overseas only nine days before the beginning of the figure skating show Fire on Ice. Olympic medallist and Slovak legend Jozef Sabovcik is no able to participate at the show that will pay tribute to his long career. Serious health issues thwarted his plans to arrive from Salt Lake City.
“I am talking with an extremely heavy heart. The situation got worse so much that, unfortunately, I have to undergo a surgery on October 31. Four days after that it is not possible for me to be able to travel over the ocean. Fire on Ice has to take place without me,” said Jozef Sabovcik. A Bratislava man has started to fight the health issues in spring. “My left leg and fingers started to go numb and I did not feel them at all. I had a piece of disc removed in July and that was the reason. My doctor recommended a surgery so we avoid long-term reflex damage in my leg. Unfortunately, the recovery was not without problems, I suffered from pains. They say it is pretty common after such surgery. However, the situation started to get worse. I tried to stabilize my health condition in all possible ways, so I could arrive to the Czech republic and Slovakia. I underwent various treatments and injections, but nothing helped,” explained a man known as Jumping Joe for being the first to jump a quadruple at a competition. “I believed it would work out until the last second.”
Sabovcik underwent various medical examinations in Salt Lake City that showed that it is not possible to postpone the surgery. “We have our talents – Eliska Brezinova, Michal Brezina, Tomas Verner, so you have a lot to be looking forward to. I am only sorry that all my family were excited about going to Slovakia and Czech republic, because we like to return there. And we had something extra special prepared for you. But I hope there will be chance in the future when I will be able to do it for you and put the symbolic end behind my amateur and professional career,” Sabovcik added. He believes that the fans will come to the show full of stars despite the fact that he himself cannot come. “I will think of you, keep my fingers crossed and I hope to see you as soon as possible.”
